This year, the average health care costs per family were roughly the same as the cost of attending an in-state public college.
For a family of four covered by an employer-sponsored preferred provider plan, health care costs jumped to $22,030 from $20,728 last year, according to the 2013 Milliman Medical Index report released Wednesday.
The average cost of attending an in-state college is $22,261 each year.
More than half of those health care costs ? about $12,886 ? are covered by an employer contribution, and employee contributions deducted from payroll cover $5,544.
That leaves about $3,600 for employees to pay out of pocket ? more than the yearly cost of gasoline for the average U.S. household.
And although overall costs were up compared to 2012, the rate of increase slowed for the fourth consecutive year. Spending increased by 6.3 percent from 2012 to 2013, compared to a 7.8 percent increase from 2009 to 2010.
The report's authors note the lower increases could be the result of the economic downturn and less spending on health care, as well as the possibility that things like accountable care organizations and electronic medical records could be creating new efficiencies in care delivery.
"We expect that the emerging reforms required by the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA) will have little impact on the cost of care for our family of four in 2013, because this family tends to be insured through a large group health plan," the study notes. "Additionally, while those reforms will likely have immediate impacts on premium rates in (the individual and small employer) markets, it is unclear whether they will have any near-term effects on growth in the cost of health care services for a given person."
