Egypt court sentences 8 to death over prophet film

CAIRO (AP) ? An Egyptian court convicted in absentia Wednesday seven Egyptian Coptic Christians and a Florida-based American pastor, sentencing them to death on charges linked to an anti-Islam film that had sparked riots in parts of the Muslim world.

The case was seen as largely symbolic because the defendants, most of whom live in the United States, are all outside Egypt and are thus unlikely to ever face the sentence. The charges were brought in September during a wave of public outrage in Egypt over the amateur film, which was produced by an Egyptian-American Copt.

The low-budget "Innocence of Muslims," parts of which were made available online, portrays the Prophet Muhammad as a fraud, womanizer and buffoon.

Egypt's official news agency said the court found the defendants guilty of harming national unity, insulting and publicly attacking Islam and spreading false information ? charges that carry the death sentence.

Maximum sentences are common in cases tried in absentia in Egypt. Capital punishment decisions are reviewed by the country's chief religious authority, who must approve or reject the sentence. A final verdict is scheduled on Jan. 29.

The man behind the film, Mark Basseley Youssef, was among those convicted. He was sentenced in a California court earlier this month to one year in federal prison for probation violations in an unrelated matter. Youssef, 55, admitted that he had used several false names in violation of his probation order and obtained a driver's license under a false name. He was on probation for a bank fraud case.

Multiple calls to Youssef's attorney in Southern California, Steve Seiden, were not returned Wednesday.

Florida-based Terry Jones, another of those sentenced, is the pastor of Dove World Outreach, a church of less than 50 members in Gainesville, Fla., not far from the University of Florida. He has said he was contacted by the filmmaker to promote the film, as well as Morris Sadek, a conservative Coptic Christian in the U.S. who posted the video clips on his website.

In a telephone interview Wednesday, Jones said the ruling "shows the true face of Islam" ? one that he views as intolerant of dissent and opposed to basic freedoms of speech and religion.

"We can speak out here in America," Jones said. "That freedom means that we criticize government leadership, religion even at times. Islam is not a religion that tolerates any type of criticism."

In a statement sent to The Associated Press Wednesday, Sadek, who fled Egypt 10 years ago and is now a Coptic activist living in Chantilly, Virginia., denied any role in the creation, production or financing of the film.

He said the verdict "shows the world that the Muslim Brotherhood regime wants to shut up all the Coptic activists, so no one can demand Copts' rights in Egypt."

Coptic Christians make up most of Egypt's Christian minority, around 10 percent of the country's 83 million. They complain of state discrimination. Violent clashes break out occasionally over land disputes, worshipping rights and love affairs between Muslims and Christians.

The connection to the film of the other five sentenced by the court was not immediately clear. They include two who work with Sadek at a radical Coptic group in the U.S. that has called for an independent Coptic state, a priest who hosts TV programs from the U.S. and a lawyer living in Canada who has previously sued the Egyptian state over riots in 2000 that left 21 Christians dead.

In a phone interview, one of the men sentenced who works with Sadek, Fikry Zaklama, said he had nothing to do with the film and hadn't even seen it.

"When I went to look at it (on the Internet), they told me it had been taken down," said Zaklama, 65, a Coptic activist and retired physician who practiced in Jersey City, N.J. "I'm not interested. I'm not a clergyman. I'm a political guy."

Nader Fawzy, a 53-year old jewelry store manager and president of an international Coptic rights organization from Toronto, Canada, said he planned to file a lawsuit against the Egyptian government in Canada for what he said was a wrongful prosecution.

He said he's terrified of being kidnapped and spirited to Egypt. Fawzy, who came to Canada in 2002 from Sweden and lost his Egyptian citizenship in 1992, denied any involvement in the film. He said the Egyptian government has long been out to get him because of his Coptic Christian activism.

"Of course, I'm worried about this death penalty," Fawzy said, adding that the verdict has limited his ability to travel freely. "Who will give me guarantees that the Egyptian government will not try to kidnap me, to take me to Egypt?"

The other person is a woman who converted to Christianity and is a staunch critic of Islam.

The official news agency report said that during the trial, the court reviewed a video of some defendants calling for an independent Coptic state in Egypt, and another of Jones burning the Quran, Islam's holy book. The prosecutor asked for the maximum sentence, accusing those charged of seeking to divide Egypt and incite sedition. All the defendants, except Jones, hold Egyptian nationality, the agency added.

Some Christians and human rights groups worry that prosecutions for insulting religion, which existed to a degree under the secular-leaning regime of deposed President Hosni Mubarak, will increase with the ascent of Islamists to power in Egypt.

Show sheds light on Handel's hidden "Messiah" helper

LONDON (Reuters) - Anyone dusting off their copy of George Frederic Handel's "Messiah" in the run-up to Christmas this year might spare a thought for the unsung hero of the piece.

Without Charles Jennens, experts argue that the 18th century oratorio would never have been created, robbing Western choral music of one of its greatest works.

Handel House Museum, located in the cozy London home where the German-born composer spent much of his life, is seeking to put the record straight about a man who, for many reasons, has been passed over by history.

"The Messiah would not have been written without him," said the museum's director Sarah Bardwell of Jennens, who lived from 1700 to 1773.

For landowner and patron of the arts Jennens, the words to the Messiah were an expression of deeply held Protestant beliefs, and he was determined that Handel, a composer he had long championed, set it to music.

The words, famously opening with "Comfort ye", are not Jennens' own but carefully selected verses from the Bible as well as a small number of psalms from the Book of Common Prayer.

"If you listen to the words it's all to do with your relationship with God as in the individual, there's none of the big theological questions," Bardwell told Reuters.

"Everyone can relate to the Messiah, even beyond Christianity on some level," she added. "I think that's why Jennens is so instrumental."

FRIEND AND BENEFACTOR

Jennens, whose family fortune came from iron, was a friend of Handel and a major backer, subscribing to his music and providing the texts for "Saul", "Belshazzar", "L'Allegro, il Penseroso ed il Moderato" and probably "Israel in Egypt".

So important did Handel consider Jennens that he referred to "your oratorio Messiah" in a letter to the librettist and made a detour on his way home from its premiere in Dublin to visit Jennens and tell him of its success with audiences.

The exhibition, "The Man Behind Messiah", includes Handel's autographed score of Saul which Jennens also annotated, suggesting changes to the composer's work including a different entry point for the words "impious wretch".

Yet Jennens' name never appeared on scores, helping to explain why his contribution is largely unknown. An intensely private man, Jennens had reasons for remaining anonymous.

As a "non-juror", or someone who did not endorse the Hanoverian royal dynasty that succeeded the House of Stuart, he was effectively barred from holding positions of authority.

And when, late in life, he published groundbreaking single-volume editions of some of Shakespeare's most famous plays, he was attacked by a rival, Shakespearean commentator George Steevens (Eds: correct), and, thus, once again overlooked.

"It's another reason he becomes kind of cut out of history," Bardwell explained. "It's been a fascinating insight into how people can just be written out of history."

Ironically, despite his fundamental role in the Messiah and some of Handel's other great oratorios, Jennens was not the biggest fan of a work that took less than a month to compose.

"He just thought Handel maybe rushed it off too quickly," said Bardwell. Ruth Smith, the curator of the exhibition, believes Handel had the manuscript for about 18 months before he started work on it.

"For it to be rattled off in three weeks, I think Jennens felt that maybe he hadn't done himself justice.

"I don't think he ever quite got over his opinion that it wasn't as good as he had hoped it was going to be. I think that also doesn't help his reputation. I'm not sure he ever quite recovered from that."

The Man Behind Messiah runs until April 14, 2013.

Deepwater tracts star in Gulf oil tract auction

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - Deep water got nearly all the bids in third federal oil and gas lease in the Gulf of Mexico since the BP oil spill.

Of $133.8 million in winning bids, only $4.6 million was for areas less than a half-mile underwater. Chevron USA Inc. and ConocoPhillips Co. led a group of companies that made 131 bids for 116 tracts in the western Gulf.

That brings total lease sales in the Gulf to more than $2 billion over the last 12 months. Before that, lease sales were halted as the federal government scaled back production and imposed sweeping new safety measures and requirements following the Deepwater Horizon disaster in April 2010.

Recent huge discoveries producing 100,000 to 200,000 barrels a day, such as BP PLC's Thunder Horse field and Shell's Perdido field, have been in deep water, said Erik G. Milito of the American Petroleum Institute.

"That's where the focus is," he said.

Neither BP nor Shell was among the 13 companies that submitted bids for Wednesday's sale.

Chevron USA had two of the day's highs: a total of $56 million in high bids, and the largest single bid. That $17.2 million bid topped offers of $11.3 million by Anadarko US Offshore Corp. and $11.3 million by Exxon Mobil Corp. for the same tract. It was the farthest west of four tracts in a row for which Chevron had high bids totaling nearly $38.2 million.

ConocoPhillips had more high bids, 62 to Chevron's 28, for a total of $51.7 million.

Overall, the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management offered about 20 million acres in the western Gulf, off Texas and extreme western Louisiana and got bids for about 652,500 acres. Seventy tracts are at least half a mile deep, and 35 others are nearly a mile under water.

Production in the Gulf is still below the levels forecast before the 2010 oil spill. Geoffrey Brand, senior economic adviser for the American Petroleum Institute, an industry trade group, said output is about 29 percent below the 1.76 million barrels a day that the federal Energy Information Administration had predicted for 2012.

U.S. Sen. David Vitter, R-La., said the moratorium imposed by the government after the BP oil spill has cost the U.S. money.

"There is no disputing the fact that our nation's domestic energy production on federal lands is far lower than what was projected before this administration took office, and is trending in the exact opposite direction of the rapid growth we're seeing on private and state lands," Vitter said.

The western region's previous sale, last December, brought more than $324 million in leases. The central Gulf, the region where BP's Macondo well was located, is a much more attractive area for drillers. An auction for that region in June brought in $1.7 billion in high bids, the fourth-largest amount for that region since 1983 and $751 million more than the one for the same area in March 2010, a month before BP's Macondo well blew out.

BP had $239.5 million in winning bids in the June lease sale.

The bureau rejects bids considered below fair-market value. It rejected 22 of June's 454 high bids as too low. It will be months before it decides if any of Wednesday's bids will be rejected.

The idea of setting a fair market value for the tracts interested members of an energy delegation from Myanmar, who questioned BOEM official Thierry DeCourt through a translator before the sale.

About 3 percent to 5 percent of all bids are rejected as "grossly underbid," he told the group.

The Environmental Protection Agency's suspension of new federal contracts for BP on Wednesday had nothing to do with its not bidding, said John Rodi, BOEM's regional director for the Gulf of Mexico.

Researcher tests powerful new tool to advance ecology, conservation

ScienceDaily (Nov. 28, 2012) ? A new University of Florida study shows ecologists may have been missing crucial information from animal bones for more than 150 years.

The study featured on the cover of the November issue of Ecology shows animal bone remains provide high-quality geographical data across an extensive time frame. The research may be used to identify regions of habitat for the conservation of threatened species.

Charles Darwin first noted the importance of studying where animal bones lie on the landscape in 1860, but the topic has since become largely lost to scientists trying to protect and conserve native wildlife. By documenting accumulations of elk bones and antlers on the landscape of Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming, study author Joshua Miller identified areas critical for the species' survival during spring and winter.

"This is fundamental stuff, because for a long time the common knowledge was that bones only lasted a few years on the landscape," said Miller, an assistant scientist at the Florida Museum of Natural History on the UF campus and Fenneman assistant research professor at the University of Cincinnati. "It turns out they last a lot longer and surveys of bones on landscapes offer a new tool for conservation and management -- one that allows us to collect decades of biological data in a single field season."

Walking across Yellowstone Park, Miller documented elk skeletal remains and determined the bones record the same seasonal distributions as aerial surveys of living elk.

Ecologists typically gather information for conservation by monitoring wild animals, a task requiring years of financial support and countless hours of observation by wildlife biologists. A long-term study in ecology consists of at least 10 to 20 years of census data. However, because some bones can survive on some landscapes for hundreds of years, they may include data from time periods beyond the reaches of a traditional ecological study, including historical insight often missing from scientists' knowledge of ecosystems, Miller said.

"A major challenge for wildlife conservation and management has been that biologists can only work in the present -- researchers can only start from when they began collecting data," Miller said. "If someone wants to develop a piece of land, for example, there may only be time for a few years of data collection, and we know as ecologists that such limited observations aren't enough to capture the full complexities of an ecosystem. This research shows we can go into the past, essentially using bones to travel through time and learn about generations of wildlife that were previously lost to science."

A popular hunting species, male elk grow to 700 pounds, shedding their more than 30-pound antlers annually. Miller used standardized bone surveys on 40 five-eighth-mile-long plots in the northern range of Yellowstone Park to identify wintering grounds by antler accumulations and calving grounds by the appearance of newborn skeletons.

"Bones are not randomly scattered across a landscape," Miller said. "Where a bone is found is often as biologically informative as which species it's from. As we investigate the quality of these geographic data, we're discovering that this is a gold mine of information."

Although the study represents a narrow test case, the strong correlation between how bones are distributed across Yellowstone Park and known patterns in how elk use the landscape shows this low-impact survey technique may be useful for understanding other areas, including poorly known or fragile ecosystems, Miller said.

Anna Behrensmeyer, vertebrate paleontology curator at the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of Natural History, uses bone surveys in East Africa for understanding the area's mammal populations and how bones become part of the fossil record. She said the study of taphonomy, the processes affecting organic remains as they become fossilized, is not commonly recognized in the field of ecology.

"In my long-term studies of bones, it has struck me that many ecologists have been missing useful information that is available in bones lying about on modern landscapes," Behrensmeyer said. "Josh is showing the potential of using bones, antlers and other remains to monitor what animals have been doing for the past decades and even hundreds of years."

Behrensmeyer said she hopes taphonomy as a research tool spreads from its traditional place in paleontology and archaeology into the realm of ecology.

"Sometimes we taphonomists feel like a small voice in the universe -- it's hard for the dead to capture the attention of scientists focused on understanding living organisms and ecosystems," Behrensmeyer said. "Once ecologists see this study, they could very well say, 'Why didn't I think of that?' "

Balloon Test Shows Space Tourism on the Horizon

Not all space tourism is rocket science. A newly successful test of a balloon could allow paying human customers to enjoy stunning Earth views and the weightless astronaut experience by 2014.

The test balloon carried a humanoid robot up to an altitude of almost 20 miles (32 kilometers) on Nov. 12 ? just a few miles shy of where skydiver Felix Baumgartner leaped from during his "space dive" in October. Startup Zero 2 Infinity wants to eventually offer hours of flight time for space tourists to do whatever they want in a near-space environment.

"Some people will want to tweet," said Jose Mariano Lopez-Urdiales, founder and CEO of Zero 2 Infinity. "Some will want to put down a carpet and pray to mecca. Some people will want to eat their favorite buffalo wings while they're up there."

The Spanish company already has waitlist customers who paid an early deposit of almost $13,000 (10,000 euros) as the first installment out of a total ticket price of $143,000 (110,000 euros). It has also attracted funding from the world's second-largest balloon manufacturer, Spain's third-largest bank, and several angel investors by proving its concept step-by-step and by relying on proven helium balloon technologies.

Flight testing took place at an Air Force base near Virgen del Camino in Spain. But Lopez-Urdiales envisions future flights launching from many other locations in the country.

The balloon experience

A typical predawn flight would take several hours to reach maximum altitude, so that passengers could enjoy seeing the sun rise against the blackness of space and see the curvature of the planet Earth. Luckily, the balloon would not need to get anywhere near the 62-mile (100 km) altitude that marks the official edge of space for its riders to enjoy stellar views.

"You would spend two hours at the floating altitude of 36 kilometers (22 miles)," Lopez-Urdiales told TechNewsDaily. "We could do it higher, but it would not make any difference, because you already see the same visual cues at 39 kilometers or even 100 kilometers." [Video: Near-Space Balloon Soars in Flight Test]

Getting back down would mean cutting the cord between the balloon and the enclosed passenger capsule. Passengers could experience about 40 to 60 seconds of weightlessness during free fall, before parachutes and a parafoil carried them safely down to Earth.

The recent test flight gave Zero 2 Infinity its first successful test of a balloon capsule large enough to carry humans, but only if the two people spent the entire trip lying down. An earlier flight test scheduled in May was canceled after wind gusts damaged the test balloon.

Robot test pilots

Future versions of the balloons, called "bloons" by the company, would have donut- or bagel-shaped capsules with plenty of standing room for two pilots and four passengers. But the test capsule proved just right for the humanoid robot named Nao ? made by Aldebaran Robotics ? that stands at knee-height compared to adult humans.

The robot rode as a passive passenger, but could someday become an active pilot that tests the controls and life-support technologies meant for humans.

"Little by little, we're teaching it how to pilot, but that's at a very early stage," Lopez-Urdiales explained. "The idea in the future is to have humanoid robots testing future complex aerospace vehicles."

The company has almost finished building a bigger test balloon that could comfortably carry two people standing up. That larger balloon could make an attempt at breaking the manned high-altitude balloon record set in the 1960s ? a record that requires the pilot to take off and land in the balloon. (Space diver Baumgartner intentionally disqualified himself by leaping out of his high-flying balloon.)

The inner journey

But Zero 2 Infinity doesn't just want to make money. Lopez-Urdiales envisions his balloons carrying scientific experiments or scientists high into Earth's atmosphere. His inspiration for creating the startup company came from his dad, an astrophysicist who worked on an experiment that went with the Cassini-Huygens mission to Saturn's moon Titan.

"I was growing up around balloons, rockets and telescopes," Lopez-Urdiales said. "My dad tested a Huygens scientific instrument on a high-altitude balloon."

The balloon space tourism's relatively more affordable price tag could also open the eyes of many more people through the "overview effect," Lopez-Urdiales said. Frank White, a communications director at Harvard's Kennedy School of Government, coined the term to describe how astronauts gained a better appreciation of global and environmental issues after seeing the Earth surrounded by the darkness of space.

"That's probably the biggest benefit private spaceflight will offer to civilians and members of the public," Lopez-Urdiales said. "The overview effect is personal experience, but then you share it. I think it goes a much longer way than bragging rights."

Four Pennsylvania Generations Against Cuts - Unions.org

SEIU-Member-Amy_walker.jpgAmy Walker will let Pennsylvania?s Representatives and Senators know today that her mother, four daughters and granddaughter can?t afford cuts to Medicaid, Social Security and Head Start.

Amy is a member from SEIU 32BJ. She works in the food service industry in Pittsburgh and has never spoken to a member of Congress before today. But she?s ready to let her Congressional leaders know just how devastating the cuts to Medicaid and Social Security would be to her loved ones.

Her mother?s kidneys stopped functioning three years ago. Since then, she has to have dialysis treatments three times a week. Her medical condition has also made it impossible for her to continue working as a childcare worker. Medicaid and Social Security have allowed Amy?s mom to keep her promises to the children she adopted.

Cuts to Social Security would put Amy?s mom and siblings at risk of losing their home. Cuts to Medicaid could result in an early death for her mom and leave her siblings without a caregiver.

Amy?s young daughter and granddaughter will need Head Start to make sure that their futures are secure. Without Head Start, Amy?s daughter will not be able to study and work because she would lack the child care she depends on. And Amy?s granddaughter would miss out on the necessary academic and social skills? gains that are the product of a quality early childhood education.

Amy and her mom have worked hard for decades to improve their family?s opportunities. They want Congress to focus on creating jobs, not cuts. Four generations in her family need Congress to act responsibly and honor the mandate that voters made clear in November.

The Best Self Improvement Tips To Help Your Business : Business

You are here: Home / Business / The Best Self Improvement Tips To Help Your Business

Are you having problems staying on the job? Have you been having trouble focusing? Are you unsatisfied with the way your meetings are going? Is your profitability lower than you want it to be? Are you criticizing yourself over it? Instead of being negative, why not try to be positive and proactive? Self-improvement can be just as effective in other areas of your life and not just your personal one. You will find your professional life can improve as well as your business if you apply various self-improvement techniques. How can self-improvement be used to generate more cash? Below, you will be able to read about some examples.

Delegation is a skill you must learn. When you try to take on everything yourself all you do is stress yourself out. Of course, you want things to be done as you see fit. You really aren?t the only person who can handle the job, and you need to remember that. Delegating will achieve two matters. You are effectively telling everyone that you are happy for your coworkers and team to help you on your projects because you trust them. When you show people your appreciation for the fact that they took on the work, you will elevate yourself in their eyes significantly. It will also give you more time to spend working on more essential things. This helps you reach more of your goals, which elevates yourself in your own esteem. Your business life will be positively influenced by all this. One of the most important skills you need to develop is prioritizing. Prioritizing is something that many people have a difficult time learning how to do. After all, it all seems important, doesn?t it? Honestly, some tasks are much more important than other tasks are. When you write things out, don?t forget that they need to be prioritized in order of importance for daily, monthly?yearly..you get the idea. Do those tasks that are the most important first. This can help you feel so much better about yourself and it will keep you working toward the things that don?t matter quite as much. When you don?t prioritize your to-do list every day, you?ll risk running out of time for the things that really matter because you focused too much on the things that do not matter all that much.

Always pay attention to your outside life, no matter what type of work you do. You should never allow your job or profession to encompass your entire life.

Yes it is good to be dedicated to your job, but you need to find a way to balance your life. If you neglect the personal areas of your life it won?t take long for your professional life to suffer as well. It is always important to spend time with friends and family, not always spending time at work or on the job. You have to have a hobby. These things do not take away from a work life. You can actually help your job by doing this.

You can improve your business performance dramatically by simply implementing self-improvement techniques that really work. We have outlined a few of them in this article. Just use a few of these strategies and watch your business really take off!

These tips and techniques can help you to improve your self-confidence and you can begin implement them today.
However in case you really want to learn how to boost your self confidence in the fastest way I will really recommend to get a well-known program that will teach you step-by-step how to improve your self confidence levels on the best ways.

Skyrim, Modern Warfare and Other Games Are Your Cyber-Monday-Hangover Deal of the Day

The tiny corner of the internet where folks parse and discuss deals seemed a bit tired this morning. Makes sense—everyone's still recovering from the deluge of bargains and sales from Cyber Monday. There are a bunch of prices still on the internet which unscrupulous retailers jacked up for Cyber Monday so their coupon codes and sales looked more attractive. Now those codes have expired. So the smart move for deal hunters is to give your UPS driver a break and download some games to play on those shiny desktops, laptops, and consoles you bought yesterday. More »

Venture capital has shifted to funding business software ...

Fred Wilson, in typical clear and direct fashion, nails the shift as venture capitalists withhold additional rounds of funding from consumer-web companies and pivot toward the search for ?enterprise? opportunities ? ways to invest in software for businesses, not for the masses. Here?s Fred:

[I]nvestors have moved from consumer to enterprise. there is a large pool of money in the venture capital asset class that is opportunistic, momentum driven, and thesis agnostic. this pool is driven largely by the public markets. this pool of capital was ?all in? on consumer web/social web in the 2009-2011 time frame. it drove a lot of activity throughout the venture capital markets because each layer of the VC stack?needs to be aware of what the next layer up wants to fund. when the momentum/late stage wanted web/social, the layers below gave them web/social. Now that the momentum/late stage wants enterprise, we should expect the layers below to give them enterprise.

The combination of these three factors is making it harder for consumer internet companies (web and mobile) to get funding.

When Fred says a ?VC stack,? by the way, he?s talking about a sort of capital ladder, with smaller ?seed? amounts assuming the most risk early on, and later, larger sums being raised in subsequent series, usually denoted A, B, C, and so on.

It?s an important point, particularly if you?re an entrepreneur who hopes to build a software product for people rather than companies (and before any of that, for the VCs that will provide the operating capital). I started blogging about this trend earlier in July, when Dell spent $2.5 billion to buy Orange County?s Quest Software. Microsoft?s $1.2-billion acquisition of Yammer, a ?Twitter for business,? a few weeks later confirmed that there?s real money in the enterprise ?renaissance,? as HootSuite CEO Ryan Holmes has called it.

Southern California is at least as well positioned as any other region to jump onto this bandwagon, although the sweet spot of ?Silicon Beach? has more to do with advertising/media/entertainment than with building applications for businesses. SoCal?s smaller overall VC scale, relative to Silicon Valley, could fit nicely into Fred?s framework: If later stage investors want enterprise, early stage investors can build those companies ? and they can build them in L.A.

Enzyme explains angina in diabetics

ScienceDaily (Nov. 27, 2012) ? In a new study published in the scientific journal Circulation, scientists at Karolinska Institutet and Karolinska University Hospital in Sweden show that an enzyme called arginase might have a key part to play in the development of cardiovascular disease in patients who already have type II diabetes. According to the team, arginase prevents the formation of protective nitrogen oxide in the blood vessels, and treatments that inhibit this enzyme reduce the risk of angina in diabetics.

"The fact that we could demonstrate the presence of arginase in several types of cell in the vessel wall gives us an entirely new explanatory model for the development of complications in these patients," says lead investigator Professor John Pernow.

Complications in diabetes patients result from constrictions of the blood vessels caused by plaque deposits on the vessel walls (atherosclerosis). The ensuing reduction in blood flow and oxygen supply can lead to angina, myocardial infarction or stroke, and possible amputation. Atherosclerosis is more common in people who smoke and who have high levels of blood lipids, although the risk is most pronounced in patients with diabetes. The reason for this correlation between diabetes and cardiovascular disease has largely eluded scientists and there is still no specific treatment for these complications.

In this present study, the researchers analysed the function of the arginase enzyme (or protein) in the blood vessels of patients with both type II diabetes and angina and found that it prevents the formation of protective molecule nitric oxide in the vessel wall. After introducing a substance already known to inhibit the enzyme, they observed a significant improvement in blood vessel function in these patients.

A comparative analysis showed that the arginase inhibitor did not have the same positive effect on patients with angina but without type II diabetes, and had no effect at all on healthy controls.

"Nitric oxide has a very important function to perform in the vessel walls," says Professor Pernow. "Apart from dilating them, it prevents the formation of plaque. For some reason, however, the mechanism is impaired in people with diabetes."

A total of 48 patients were included in the study and the team is now planning a larger follow-up study to confirm their results and develop treatments using arginase inhibitors. The study was financed by the Swedish Research Council, the Swedish Heart-Lung Foundation, the NovoNordisk Foundation, the European Foundation for the Study of Diabetes, and the Gustav V and Queen Victoria Foundation.

Call of Duty: Black Ops II

I can't recall a first-person shooter that made me feel more like I was in the middle of an action movie than Call of Duty: Black Ops II. This, however, is not necessarily always a positive thing. The cinematic approach plays well enough (if never spectacularly) in the multiplayer and zombie modes that give this latest chapter in the venerable military-themed series its longest-lasting heft. But when similar techniques are applied to the single-player campaign, the results are more middling, especially in light of the sterling success of the?original Black Ops ?two years ago. Treyarch's follow-up to that super-smash hit has already obliterated sales records this time around as well, so it doesn't need much help finding an audience. But whether this burgeoning franchise-within-a-franchise can thrive with continued treatment of this sort is another question.

Medium-Rare Multiplayer
Let's start with what will be the meat of the Black Ops II experience for many: multiplayer mode. Treyarch has not toyed significantly with the formula, still giving players numerous options for facing off against others across the country and around the globe. "Core" missions include Team Deathmatch, Free-for-All, Search & Destroy, and Capture the Flag (all of which are also available in "Hardcore" mode, which removes the HUD and limits health), and eight others; you can also engage in in two types of "Combat Training" runs to hone your skills, or play four "Party Games" that put interesting for-entertainment-only spins on the weapons you can use and the rules you play by.

These are all enjoyable for what they are, although to what degree is determined by the people you play with. If you want to be guaranteed of having talented, trustworthy squad mates, you're better off creating a custom game and inviting the people you want to join you rather than trusting fate to provide you with worthy allies from the standard lounge system. In any event, it's easy to lose yourself in game after game, and we found that even playing on a below-average team didn't depress the fun factor too much.

You won't notice a lot of big changes in the everyday operation of Black Ops II's multiplayer mode, with one key exception: the new "Pick 10" character configuration system. With it, you can forgo established classes and instead create a new from scratch, customizing all the aspects of your play by using a points system that affects everything from weapons to perks. It won't appeal to everyone, but it strikes us as a clever addition that lets you personalize your multiplayer experience as much or as little as you want.

The Walking Dead
Not in the mood for a traditional multiplayer free-for-all? Zombies mode puts a fantastical spin on the shooting concept, dropping you into a closed location where you must defend against ever-increasing hordes of the raging undead.

"Survival" mode, in which you frantically try to acquire the weapons you need to decapitate the decaying masses and board up the entrances to your stronghold, is still on hand, but it has been joined by two others. "Grief" is a cool idea, in which two teams attack each other indirectly by luring the zombies against the opposing side. A campaign-style offering called "Tranzit" lets you move organically between maps in a way that imparts some much-welcome cohesion to what's been since its inception a quirky aftertaste to Call of Duty's more realistic flavor. Tranzit might even be too open-ended, as it can be difficult to discern exactly what you're supposed to do with all the options at your disposal.

These are, alas, hardly major innovations for the most part, but they're the only ones of real note in Zombies. Otherwise, this is standard, "shame the shambler" stuff that lacks the pungent immediacy of Call of Duty at its best. We imagine it's tough to think of that many ways to spice up a zombie shooter, which is perhaps stylistically over-specific as it is, but if this mode is going to continue to appear in future titles, it needs a facelift or it's going to get really boring, really quickly. (Unless you adore titles like Left 4 Dead, it might very well have already arrived there.)

Cameron Bailey on Indian Film's Global Appeal - Hollywood Reporter

As a regular visitor to India, Toronto Film Festival artistic director Cameron Bailey has always been a strong supporter of the country's vibrant film sector. He demonstrated that support earlier this year when TIFF's City to City program showcased films from Mumbai. While visiting? the Film Bazaar in Goa, which is organized by India's National Film Development Corporation, Bailey sat down with THR to discuss the Indian film sector's evolution, how it compares with China and why Bollywood stars are having crossover success in Hollywood.

The Hollywood Reporter: There seems to be a new energy around India's indie scene right now. What do you make of this vibe at the Film Bazaar?

Cameron Bailey: I am hopeful for a greater diversity of Indian cinema... There are projects at Film Bazaar which are being made in different regions and languages, some for the first time. That I think has a real richness that can be tapped. The stories of the smaller cultural groups - whether they are tribal communities or far removed from bustling Mumbai ? I want to see more of them and that's beginning to happen.

PHOTOS: Toronto Film Festival Dailies: Photos of the Fest's Biggest Stars
?
THR: Is there a unique Indian voice that you are beginning to hear now?

Bailey: That's an interesting question. Political restrictions in a country like Iran have produced a very unique cinema. India doesn't have those kind of restrictions but there could be restrictions of the marketplace which exerts an enormous commercial influence on Indian filmmakers. And this can be as damaging as political restrictions because it limits what you can do. What I like is when filmmakers start engaging with this challenge: they don't accept it or reject but contest it. And that's what happened in Iran. You are right next door to China with a big market and thriving scene.
?
THR: But it seems China has developed its own voice via its martial arts epics. Do you think India will have multiple voices?
?
Bailey: Of course, there are so many languages here to start with so India has to have multiple voices. If you look at the India-China comparison a little more, China is usually engaging with historical stories. But in India what you have is a conflict between tradition and modernity. Its in every element of Indian society ? from the generation conflict to the rural-urban divide. So if there is a voice then this conflict could be a recurring theme in Indian cinema.
?
THR: Generally, how is Indian cinema evolving in your opinion?
?
Bailey: When I started programming Indian cinema in 2005 at Toronto, I saw a kind of split between mainstream Bollywood and the arthouse scene. The big change I have seen since is there are now filmmakers who pay attention to the commercial market but are also making personal films in a more independent way. You see this in western Europe but not so much in India. This is gratifying to see that filmmakers are seeing both sensibiltiies and they know their audiences are not just Indian or the diaspora but global.
?
THR: How is the international perception of Indian cinema changing?
?
Bailey: The fact that the head of Fortissimo Films (Michael J. Werner) is here at Film Bazaar in Goa says a lot. Seven years ago he was not attending an event like this, which now has people from Tribeca and Cannes. We are here paying attention to the enormous potential beyond the commercial arena. There is no country on earth like India where filmmaking is so vital and productive. The quality of film technicians is also unmatched. But I still think some filmmakers are paying too much attention to the domestic audience and that might be a controversial thing to say but I think there's a wider world out there. Look at Scandivania which has a small domestic market but they have filmmakers like Lars von Trier who are known globally. As an Indian filmmaker you have to be clear who is your audience. If it is the strong domestic market that is absolutely fine but if you have global aspirations then you will have to think differently.

STORY: Toronto Film Fest's Cameron Bailey to Curate Bell Lightbox Film Series
?
THR: With Hollywood studios fortifying their India presence what do you see ahead?
?
Bailey: People looking at commercial cinema from outside sometimes stick too closely to the formula and they may not always succeed. So the initial attempts by Warner and Sony to produce Bollywood films were not so successful. As an example, Korea offers an interesting case study with filmmakers like Bong Joon-ho (The Host) and Park Chon-Wook (Oldboy). They are now both making films in Hollywood for studios. The South Korean model is to make thrillers but they were arthouse and very intense with thriller elements, yet they had a kind of extreme quality which came from auteur filmmaking. And that attracted the attention of the West via festivals and hence Hollywood. But they were also high on technical qualities, which India already has. Like food, films also need a special flavoring. Indian food in Toronto is differently flavored than in India and you can see that in films. So you have to come up with the right flavor.
?
THR: What was the response to Toronto's City to City program this year which featured films from Mumbai?
?
Bailey: It opened a door to a new kind of Indian cinema because the big Bollywood films are so dominant and people think that's all there is from India. So for the first time a number of people at the festival realised these films don't have songs or big stars or fantasies but are real about contemporary India. That was a huge success as I wanted to break down that image of Indian cinema just being Bollywood. We have showcased arthouse filmmakers in the past whose films are more connected to poetry rather than popcorn. Anurag Kashyap's Gangs of Wasseypur was a popcorn movie but it's something like a Quentin Tarantino movie.
?
THR: There's always been this long running debate about India's presence on the international festival circuit which is quite low given the size of the industry. Do you see that changing?
?
Bailey: At Toronto we show about six films from India in a regular year, though this year we had 16 because of the City to City program. But for a country producing a thousand films, India's representation is low. Compare that to France from where we are showing an average of 15 films though the country produces far fewer films than India. But they have a whole industry of filmmakers who produce films that travel the festival circuit. I think that is now beginning to happen in India when you see directors like Ashim Ahluwalia (Miss Lovely) or Dibakar Banerjee (Shanghai). They are as sophisticiated as anyone working in Paris. They are informed about international trends and as long as they can navigate that very complicated set of influences between what the Indian market wants, what the world wants and what they want for themselves, then they are going to be the ones to produce the films that will travel.

STORY: Festival Director Cameron Bailey Embraces Public Aspect of Event (Q&A)
?
THR: But how viable can that be?
?
Bailey: That really is upto the Indian audience if they want to come out and support these kind of films. And its upto the industry to deliver these kind of cinemas. What is sorely lacking in India is that there are no arthouse cinemas. I am sure there are going to be lots of people who want to see a good Indian arthouse film only if there were enough cinemas for them. Exhibition and distribution has to change.
?
THR: Taking a long term view, what is the image of India that you would like the rest of the world to see through films?
?
Bailey: I want the world to see contempoary urban India because there is that stereotypical and ridiculous image of poverty that has to change. You know how French cinema communicates an image of France as being urbane, cosmopolitan, sophisticated and romantic??Why not have films from India that show how incredibly cosmopolitian and modern Mumbai or Delhi are? I want to see more of that. On the other side I am also transported when I see parts of India that people don't even know existed as seen in Frozen by Shivajee Chandrabhushan which was filmed entirely in the remote regions of Ladakh.

?THR: A country is also known by its talent. What are your views on Indian talent given some are making international inroads?
?
Bailey: I think there is enormous acting talent in India but often they haven't been directed well. And that's because they have been directed for purely commercial reasons. With the right combination of good writing, direction and performance, these actors could have international appeal. Nana Patekar is one of the best character actors not just in India, but the world. Abhay Deol is incredibly charismatic and is becoming the face of new Indian cinema. He could be like Dustin Hoffman was in the seventies, an actor who embodies a revolution in cinema. Konkona Sen Sharma can be very good as well. They have the talent but they need everything else around them. Its a good start for Indian actors who have started to appear in mainstream Hollywood films (like Irrfan Khan in The Amazing Spider-Man) but it can't end there. They can hold up against big Hollywood stars and I am not surprised. For instance, Anupam Kher's performance in Silver Linings Playbook is terrific.

So you want to be a personal trainer | Fitnorama magazine

Posted on 24 November 2012.

Personal training is a financially and emotionally rewarding career. As a personal trainer or PT, you have the opportunity to make a radical impact on the health and well being of your clients. Using exercise and dietary interventions, you can help people literally change their lives. While being a PT is a terrific way to make a living, getting into the health and fitness business and staying in can be a challenge. In this article we will give you all the information you need to get on the path to building a successful PT business.

Getting Qualified

Broadly speaking there are three levels of qualification in fitness instruction and personal training:

Level two ? gym instruction
level three ? personal training
Level four ? exercise for special populations and medical referral

Level two allows you to work unsupervised in a gym environment and write basic programmes for healthy exercises who have no specific workout requirements. At this level, your main job would be inductions and general exercise instruction. Level two instructors are commonly employed rather than self-employed.

Level three means that you can work with a wider range of clients, usually on a one-to-one basis. You may be employed or self-employed and will be qualified to work with people suffering from less serious medical conditions as well as helping people with weight management or fitness related goals such as sports training or bodybuilding as well as being qualified to offer nutritional advice.

Level four is currently the highest level of qualification for a personal trainer and allows you to work with people who suffer from serious medical conditions, post-operative rehab and work alongside medical professionals in exercise referral schemes.

Awarding Bodies, Training Providers and the Common Syllabus

There is no denying that some personal trainers are under qualified or completely unqualified although this number gets smaller each year as the government and gyms work to tighten up on unlicensed PTs. Many PTs may have attended a course but, unfortunately, their certificate may not be worth the paper it is printed on if it is from an unsanctioned course provider. Holders of unsanctioned qualifications are not able to get insurance. If you have a personal trainer, make sure that their qualifications are valid and that they have comprehensive insurance cover.

Most recognized personal training qualifications follow more or less the same syllabus made up of common units set by Skills Active, body that ?oversees? personal training qualifications on behalf of the UK government. There are numerous awarding bodies and a host of training providers that deliver the awarding body?s courses. This means that there is a plethora of course providers who all able to offer an identical level of qualification.

When looking for a suitable course and at the various training providers, it?s worth considering the following:

Full time versus part time courses ? while part time courses mean you can continue your employment while you study, it can also mean that it takes you up to a year or more to get a qualification that could be completed in a matter of weeks if you studied full time. Full time courses offer ?total immersion? in the subject but, for many, this is prohibitive as it means time away from your family and having to give up a secure job.

Location of the training venue ? will you have to spend lots of time commuting that would be better spent studying? Residential courses negate this problem but then you have to consider your accommodation options.

Face to face versus blended/distance learning ? many training providers offer blended or distance learning courses where you study the theoretical elements of PT online or in books and then attend their training centre for practical instruction and assessments. This is advantageous if you don?t want to quit your job and can?t spare the time for regular studies but also means that you have to study alone and be very self-motivated. It?s all too easy to adopt an ?I?ll study tomorrow? attitude when studying at home. Many students who start blended learning courses with the very best of intensions never actually finish their qualifications.

Course costs ? it definitely pays to shop around so don?t make any decisions before you have done your research. Some training providers employ salespeople whose sole job is to get you to sign on the dotted line. It can be very difficult to get out of a contract if you sign up for a course and then decide you?d rather go with another training provider and refunds are normally not offered. Don?t commit yourself until you have explored all the options available.

Continued Personal Development ? CPD is the term used to describe additional courses that help to ?top up? your basic level of qualification and make sure that you remain up to date with new industry developments. While not compulsory, CPD is one of the ways the government wants to ensure PTs keep their qualifications current. Assuming you enjoyed your training experience with your chosen training provider, you may want to stick with them for any subsequent add-on courses you decide to do. Some learning providers offer discounts for ex-students or only allow you to enroll on one of their CPD courses if you have studied with them before.

Getting started as a PT

You have two main options: employed and self-employed. Employed trainers are salaried and work a set number of hours and days per week whereas self-employed trainers work flexible hours and manage their own appointment diary, and, most importantly, only get paid when they have clients!

Self-employed trainers have another couple of options to consider: work from a gym or be ?unattached? and train people in their homes, place of work or local outdoor areas such as parks. If you base yourself at a gym you have access for the entire gym membership for sales and marketing as well as a well equipped gym but you will probably have to pay a ?ground rent? for the privilege. An unattached PT has no such commitments but will have to advertise locally to secure clients.

All of the options described can work and work well so it?s a matter of deciding what works best for you. Employed PTs can enjoy a degree of job security while self-employed PTs have a much higher earning potential. Gym-based PTs have a large number of potential clients to which they can market their services but may end up paying out ?600 or more per month to the owner of the gym irrespective of whether they have had a great month or a really quiet one. Unattached PTs have no such ground rent worries but will probably need to buy a selection of training equipment, have a car big enough to transport all the equipment from venue to venue, spend money on regular advertising and, if many local councils have their way, pay a stipend for using public spaces such as parks.

The bottom line

I have been involved in the fitness industry for almost 25 years now ? the first 15 years as a gym instructor and PT, the last 10 years as a lecturer and journalist. I can honestly say that, with my hand firmly placed on my heart, I will never leave the fitness industry and can?t imagine having done anything else. I thoroughly recommend working in health and fitness but not without some reservation. It?s a competitive, challenging industry and while the work is enjoyable and satisfying, it?s not an easy job and for many PTs, not the most well paid either. However, in terms of job satisfaction and the fact you get paid to do your hobby?I can?t think of a better choice of career.

gulftoday.ae | Australia apologises for sex abuse in military

SYDNEY: The Australian government on Monday made a parliamentary apology to victims of abuse in the military and set up a compensation fund after hundreds of claims of rape and sexual assault.

Defence Minister Stephen Smith also established an independent taskforce to individually assess each allegation uncovered by a report commissioned by the government last year.

The taskforce will be able to refer appropriate matters to police for formal criminal investigation, while offering victims help in accessing counselling, health, and other services.

"Young men and women have endured sexual, physical or mental abuse from their colleagues which is not acceptable and does not reflect the values of a modern, diverse, tolerant Australian society," Smith told parliament.

"Such experiences have had a lasting, serious, traumatic and adverse impact on the people who have experienced them."

In his statement, Smith lashed out at senior military figures who occupied positions of trust and who "abused that trust through their behaviour, including through the turning of a blind eye."

"Today's men and women of the Australian Defence Force or the Department of Defence who have suffered sexual or other abuse, on behalf of the government I say sorry," he said.

"You should never have experienced this abuse. Again, I say sorry."

A capped compensation fund was set up with the taskforce, headed by former West Australian Supreme Court judge Len Roberts-Smith, to determine who qualifies for payouts of up to Aus$50,000 ($52,000).

The move follows an independent report sparked by the so-called Skype scandal in 2011, when footage of a young male recruit having sex with a female classmate was streamed online to cadets in another room without her knowledge.

The report detailed 24 allegations of rape that never went to trial, among more than 1,000 claims of sexual or other abuse from the 1950s to the present day, involving both men and women.

As well as the rape claims, it said that "from the 1950s through to the early 1980s, many boys aged 13, 14, 15 and 16 years of age in the defence force suffered abuse including serious sexual and other physical abuse."

Until the 1960s, boys as young as 13 were recruited into the Navy, while 15-year-olds were accepted into the Army, Navy and Air Force up until the early 1980s. The minimum enlisting age is now 17.

The report also highlighted brutal initiation ceremonies and depicted a culture in the military of covering up, failing to punish perpetrators and hostility towards victims who complained.

Smith said the Defence Force would bear the financial burden of any compensation, with military and government officials "committed to zero tolerance in the future."

"Acknowledging the past and taking responsibility for it is only the first step," he said.

"We must ensure that such abuse can never be tolerated again." Defence Force chief General David Hurley also apologised, saying he recognised "the damage and suffering that has been caused to some."

"The Australian Defence Force has begun addressing these causes through its cultural reform programme," he said.

"On behalf of the Australian Defence Force, I say that I am sorry to those who have suffered sexual, physical or mental abuse while serving."
