Six classifications look to be here to stay, but hybrid leagues may be on the way out along with eight-team basketball and volleyball tournaments.
Those were some of the revelations that came from two of the Oregon School Activities Association?s committees last month.
The classification and districting committee announced following its last meeting that it reached consensus to retain the six-classification system that was created in 2006, because the majority of schools favor that format.
However, the committee said it has heard negative reaction to the hybrid leagues that were created in 2010, including a Midwestern League hybrid featuring local 6A and 5A schools. Schools have been asked to present possible alternatives to the hybrid leagues that could help cut down on travel.
Those options could come Monday when the committee holds its sixth public meeting in Wilsonville. The committee also has a meeting scheduled in May before making a final recommendation in September. The new classifications and leagues will go into effect for the 2014-15 year.
The latest draft from the committee moves Willamette up to Class 6A along with Sheldon and South Eugene in the Southern Oregon Conference with Grants Pass, North Medford, Roseburg and South Medford. That is similar to the alignment from 2006-2010 that stirred local outrage as schools faced increased travel expenses.
Also in the draft, Thurston would drop back to 5A in the Midwestern League with Springfield, North Eugene, Marist, Churchill, Eagle Point, Crater and Ashland. That is similar to the current football league but would mark the first time that local 5A schools have been put in the same league as schools from Southern Oregon in all other team sports.
Another change being considered would dramatically affect the PacWest Conference by moving Bandon and Coquille in with Pleasant Hill, Harrisburg, Creswell, Jefferson and Scio.
Blanchet Catholic, Salem Academy, Toledo, Chemawa and Santiam Christian are put into other leagues.
In Class 2A, the current draft moves Monroe from the Mountain View Conference into the Tri-River.
The OSAA?s state championship committee held its first meeting last month, as it is required to set up championship formats once the classifications and leagues are set.
The OSAA executive board asked the committee to analyze the basketball and volleyball tournaments, which currently feature eight teams. The committee has been asked to consider eliminating consolation games or cutting the tournaments in half to create a Final Four.
The committee will next meet on April 29 and make a final recommendation in January.
