Former State Hospital Land to Become Downtown Raleigh Park

Posted on 12/06/12

The land surrounding an historical North Carolina hospital will be leased to the City of Raleigh for transformation into an urban park.

People have been discussing this topic for years, even before it was decided that Dorthea Dix hospital, a state-run treatment center for the mentally ill, was officially announced as closing. A few people don?t like the idea. However, the majority do.

The deal is not 100% done, of course, but all the parameters are in place and a 75-year lease has been approved by the Raleigh City Council. It is required to be signed by the end of this year, December 30.

For those who are seeking to continue Downtown Raleigh?s urban renewal, this is terrific news. Every city needs outdoor spaces. Even though Moore Square and Chavis Park, as well as few others, certainly do a great job of serving that need, the potential of a 325-acre hilly parkscape has the potential to become a draw in and of itself, as opposed to simply a nice amenity or place to sit for a few minutes.

Eventually, homes and retail will be energized by what happens on the land. Think of all the festivals, concerts and events that now have another great facility to put on the schedule. This kind of decision has the potential to impact the city in the same way the re-opening of Fayetteville Street Mall to traffic did for the city?s interior core.

Congratulations to everyone involved for sustaining a vision for Raleigh. It will no-doubt be felt Triangle-wide.
