Wild-card hopeful Angels rally to win 5-4 at Texas - KTRE.com ...

By STEPHEN HAWKINS
AP Sports Writer

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Torii Hunter hit a two-run double with two outs in the ninth inning, and the Los Angeles Angels boosted their wild-card chances by rallying past the AL West-leading Texas Rangers 5-4 Sunday in the opener of a day-night doubleheader.

Hunter's double into the left-center gap came off Joe Nathan (3-5), who blew a save for only the third time in 39 chances this season.

The big hit by Hunter came right after Nathan struck out Mike Trout, who earlier in the game became the first major league rookie with 30 homers and 40 stolen bases in the same season.

Los Angeles (88-70) closed two games behind Oakland (90-68) for the AL's second wild card. The A's played at home later Sunday against Seattle.

Texas (92-66) saw its division lead over the A's cut to two games with four to play.

With the loss, the Rangers won't have an opportunity at home to clinch their third consecutive AL West title. They close the regular season in a 3-game series at Oakland that starts Monday. The Rangers would assure a playoff berth with a victory against the Angels on Sunday night.

Los Angeles trailed 4-3 in the ninth before a one-out single by Maicer Izturis, retired on a reversed call two innings earlier. Nathan walked Chris Iannetta, Trout struck out and Hunter, who lives in nearby Prosper, hit a drive that rolled to the wall.

Garrett Richards (4-3) retired Nelson Cruz with two runners on in the eighth, and Ernesto Frieri pitched a perfect ninth for his 24th save in 26 chances.

That wasn't what the Orioles and their fans wanted to see while watching the Rangers game on the scoreboard in center field in Baltimore. An Angels' loss would have clinched the Orioles' first postseason berth since 1997.

Left-hander Derek Holland (11-6) was set to pitch the nightcap for Texas against right-hander Ervin Santana (9-12). That was the scheduled matchup for Saturday's game, which was called off four hours after its scheduled start because of rain.

Yu Darvish struck out seven in 6 2-3 innings but came out after Trout's homer, which trimmed the lead to 4-3, and Hunter followed with a double.

Alexi Ogando relieved and induced an inning-ending grounder on a full-count pitch to Albert Pujols, who already had two singles. With primary setup man Mike Adams injured, Ogando stayed on for the eighth.

Cruz hit his 24th homer for Texas, a two-run shot in the second, an inning after the right fielder threw out Trout on the bases.

Trout started the game with a walk and quickly got his 48th stolen base. His 30th homer, a solo shot to straightaway center, came on the first pitch Darvish threw him in the seventh.

After the stolen base in the first, Trout tried to advance on Hunter's flyball to right. But Cruz threw a one-hop strike to third baseman Adrian Beltre to retiret Trout, who slid head-first into the same side of the base where Beltre was.

Izturis led off the seventh with a weakly hit ball that dropped between the mound and first base. Mitch Moreland fielded the ball, and tossed to Darvish, who made the catch, tagged the base and showed the ball to umpire Mark Wegner, who signaled safe.

Manager Ron Washington came out of the dugout to argue, but umpires huddled and called Izturis out, bringing out Angels manager Mike Scioscia. Two batters later, Trout homered.

Trout had the first of 3 consecutive two-out singles in the third and scored on Pujols' hit.

Elvis Andrus drew a two-out walk in the third and scored on Josh Hamilton's single that snapped the slugger's 0 for 17 career mark against Zack Greinke. Beltre hit a popup to shallow right field that Hunter never saw, and it dropped for an RBI double and a 4-1 lead.

NOTES: The 21-year-old Trout is the youngest player with a 30-30 season. He needs two stolen bases to become only the third player ever with 30 homers and 50 stolen bases. The others? Eric Davis (1987) and Barry Bonds (1990). ... Beltre made an incredible defensive play starting the eighth, diving to his right for a back-handed stab. He got up, barely pivoting his feet while making a quick sidearm throw that got Kendry Morales out at first. ... Hamilton, who struck out three times, has 126 RBIs. ... There were no weather issues Sunday for the first-ever split doubleheader at Rangers Ballpark.

AJC Applauds California Law Banning Insurance Investments in Iran

September 28, 2012 ? Los Angeles ? AJC applauds California for enacting the first law in the nation that will deprive Iran of an important source of capital derived from insurance industry indirect investments.

?

California Governor Edmund ?Jerry? Brown, Jr. signed the State Assembly bill this week. The law, known as Assembly Bill 2160, was authored by Los Angeles area Assembly members Bob Blumenfield and Mike Feuer, and followed AJC-supported legislation that also prohibits California from investing retirement funds or contracting for goods and services with companies that do business with Iran. AJC was one of the original supporters of AB 2160 and traveled to California?s state Capital, Sacramento, to advocate for its passage.

?

?The urgency of the Iranian nuclear threat compels action,? said AJC Los Angeles President Clifford P. Goldstein. ?AJC supported AB 2160 because it sends a strong message to California insurance companies that there is a steep penalty if they insist on investing in Iran's energy sector."

?AB 2160 requires a domestic insurer to treat any indirect investment in the Iranian energy sector as a non-admitted asset on the financial statements of that insurer in filings with the California Insurance Commissioner.

?

AJC is leading efforts across the country to support state-level sanctions legislation against Iran. California is the ninth state to have passed some form of Iran sanctions legislation supported by AJC this year.

Bradley-Mickelson win in record fashion

MEDINAH, Ill. (AP) ? Keegan Bradley and Phil Mickelson have won again, and this time they did it in record fashion.

The Americans beat Lee Westwood and Luke Donald 7 and 6 on Saturday, matching the Ryder Cup record for most lopsided finish in an 18-hole team match. It had happened twice before, most recently in 1991, both times in foursomes.

Bradley is now 3-0, the best start in the Ryder Cup for a U.S. rookie since that guy he was playing with did it in 1995. And it handed Donald his second straight loss in foursomes after going unbeaten his first six times out.

The Americans lead Europe 6-3, and are up in two other matches.

Are You Sure Your Home is Safe from All Kinds of Danger? | Home ...

A home is considered to be one of the most precious components of ones life. Without it a person would have nowhere to return to after a hard days work. So it is very important that ones home is always kept protected from both internal as well as external threats.

Today home security is becoming a rising concern for individuals because crime rate is rapidly increasing. Criminals are on the loose and they spend their time checking out the neighborhood for potential targets to break and enter into. The number of break-ins and robberies that have been reported has steadily been increasing.

People today are scared that their homes can be broken into and valuables stolen at any time. What is even worse is that since their home is not secured from danger, their family members are in a vulnerable position at all times.

Home security 300x199 Are You Sure Your Home is Safe from All Kinds of Danger?

Once an individual avails of a good home security system, he will be able to enjoy peace of mind at all times as his family members and valuables will be safe at all times. ADT home security system provide homes with multi-layered protection. The home security system consists of a security surveillance camera that monitors the perimeters of the house at all times. Motion sensors are installed at all entry points of the house as well as throughout the house.

Most burglars think of entering homes through the windows. Merely shutting the windows tight or locking them is not going to be enough to repel these intruders. However, when individuals avail of ADT home security systems, intruders will get caught as soon as they enter the house due to the presence of motion sensors present all throughout the house.

However, as soon as an intrusion is sensed an ear piercing alarm will be let out that immediately alert the individuals at home as well as the neighbors. In addition the police will also be immediately alerted about the intrusion and help will be dispatched right away.

ADT home security systems are made in such a way that they do not only protect individuals homes from external danger but from internal danger as well. ADT home security system safeguard homes from fire, carbon monoxide emissions and they monitor changes in temperature as well as floods.

In this way they help to ensure that the house is not destroyed due to internal factors. While one is away or busy fire could easily break out and spread all throughout the house and in the process destroy life and property. Carbon monoxide emissions could lead to death of members inside the home if undetected and ADT home security systems ensure that these emissions never go undetected.

Damage to property and household valuables could also occur due to floods but ADT home security systems provide 24/7 monitoring of home and immediately notify household members as well as the fire department as soon as any such changes are detected.

Once a person avails of ADT home security systems, they can rest assured that their home is safe from both internal as well as external dangers.

Novo Nordisk says diabetes drug approved in Japan

DEAR ABBY: My husband and I just got some shocking news. His father -- age 81 -- is leaving his wife of 60 years! Mom is not entirely self-sufficient and seems dependent on him.Dad found himself a younger woman -- a "chick" of 70. He has announced that he still has sexual needs and wants to enjoy the rest of his life. My husband thinks it will be a short-term fling and he'll return to Mom, but she says she won't be taking him back. (Who knows how she'll feel later?)My problem is, no matter what happens between them, I'm having a hard time even considering forgiving him for his selfishness. ...

Diploma in Civil Engineering

One of the oldest and most important engineering disciplines in the world is civil engineering. Many buildings and structures have evoked our amazement, right from the pyramids of Egypt to the TajMahal in India and all these bear testament to the rich legacy of civil engineering.

Civil engineering can be defined as a specialised branch of engineering that deals with the design, construction and maintenance of bridges, buildings, dams and other structures. Human civilization cannot exist without major contributions from this branch of engineering and it is thus an indispensable discipline.

Civil Engineers are usually employed in construction activities in both the private and public sectors. They can also become a research fellow or a lecturer in universities. Further opportunities for these technical guys include being a surveyor, a technical report writer or even a project manager. Thus the possibilities and avenues for growth are endless. These specialised technical personnel have to have an eye for detail and an inherent ability to improvise.

The engineers involve themselves in feasibility and technical studies and conduct detailed investigations in the initial stages itself to avoid costly lapses in the later stages. The design and architectural aspects of the building are also studied in detail to ensure that the project complies with existing regulatory guidelines. Further, a risk and personnel management plan is formulated to ensure that safety aspects of any project are not compromised.

Further, these engineers must have good leadership skills to ensure that they have the right attitude to interact with personnel involved in the project right from labourers to high profile stake holders.

Equipment quality and reliability is another important aspect for which these engineers are responsible for and they have to ensure that near misses and accidents do not happen in the construction site. A good knowledge of finance is required to ensure that the project is completed within budget in a timely and efficient manner. Thus a civil engineer needs to be an all rounder.

They have a very challenging work environment and are one of the best paid professionals in the world. Job satisfaction is also high since the spirit of ?I helped build that? runs through the blood of every civil engineer.

Elumalai Polytechnic located in Villupuram has been a pioneer in the field of polytechnic education and the college has ensured that its graduates are one of the most competent diploma civil engineers.

The polytechnic is headed by Mr. Swamikannu an eminent industrialist and philanthropist.

The polytechnic helps to lay a strong foundation to ensure that the diploma graduates are ready for higher study in civil engineering. In case the graduates want to enter the industry, the polytechnic ensures that it equips them with the necessary skills to make them industry ready.

The civil engineering department has excellent and experienced teachers with a skilled support staff. The department has modern and well equipped labs and also undertakes consultancy work for the industry.

The department also arranges for lectures on various topics by industry leaders to broaden the perspective of the students and inspire them to think creatively. The students are also taken on industry site visits as a part of their curriculum like the Ferro Cement Research Centre in Pondicherry, Structural Research Centre in Chennai etc. This is to encourage the students to think innovatively during their project period and also to establish some interaction with the industry leaders.

With the real estate boom in the recent years, the need for civil engineers has increased exponentially. Elumalai Polytechnic has been sustaining this industrial growth by producing some of the best diploma engineers year after year. With a strong legacy and bright future, the opportunities are simply limitless in this evergreen field.

Referees return to relief of fans, players and owners

(Reuters) - To the relief of fans, players and owners, the National Football League's (NFL) regular referees will return to work on Thursday after a deal was struck to end a damaging months-long lockout of unionized game officials.

The storm of criticism following a botched call that handed the Seattle Seahawks a victory at the expense of the Green Bay Packers on Monday added urgency to talks between the league and NFL Referees Association (NFLRA) and a new eight-year deal was reached just before midnight on Wednesday.

"It's great news for everyone - players, fans, sponsors and the league," Jacksonville Jaguars owner Shad Khan told Reuters on Thursday. "We look forward to seeing NFL officials back in uniform at EverBank Field on Sunday and well beyond."

The lockout had been in place since June when talks on a new Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) broke down, forcing the NFL to use poorly qualified replacement referees for the pre-season and opening three weeks of the regular season.

Significantly, NFL team owners only became directly involved in talks on Tuesday after the touchdown call in Seattle prompted a nationwide reaction with massive media interest, fan protests and even encouragement from President Barack Obama for the two sides to resolve their differences swiftly.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell apologized to fans for the three weeks of substandard officiating.

"We are sorry to have to put our fans through that, but in the short term it's something you have to do to make sure you get the right type of agreement for the long term," he told reporters on a conference call. "We weren't going to shut down football. It is painful in the process."

Goodell rejected the suggestion that the Monday incident in primetime was a "tipping point" but did acknowledge that it had played a role in getting the deal done.

"It might have pushed the parties further along, but we were in intense negotiations," he said.

The recognizable face of Gene Steratore, in his 10th season as an NFL referee, will be in charge of Thursday's primetime game between the host Baltimore Ravens and Cleveland Browns, while replacement refs return to the lower divisions of college, high school and semi-pro football.

'MISINFORMED BET'

The new CBA must still be ratified on Friday by the union membership but NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell lifted the lockout prior to that vote in order to avoid another game with the heavily criticized replacements in charge.

The union won some concessions from the NFL on the changes to the pension wanted by the league while agreeing to the introduction of some full-time referees and a development pool of future refs.

Compensation for game officials will increase from an average of $149,000 a year in 2011 to $173,000 in 2013, rising to $205,000 by 2019, the NFL said.

While the agreed way to grandfather in the pension may leave some of the referees unsatisfied, the current system will be kept in place for five years before a switchover to a 401(k), the terms were widely viewed as favorable for the union.

"The owners appear to have grossly overestimated their bargaining power and underestimated the bargaining power of the referees," said Richard Sheehan, a University of Notre Dame finance professor who specializes in the economics of sports.

"Referees had the option, at least in the short-term, of not agreeing with whatever the NFL powers demanded,"

"The owners' arrogance and hubris led them to make a large wager that the referees' job was so easy that they could hire replacements and no one would notice. Unfortunately, fans noticed. If there was any doubt that the owners made an incredibly misinformed bet, the doubt was removed Monday night."

The NFL Players Association, who were in a lockout situation with the league last year, welcomed the end of the conflict.

"Our workplace is safer with the return of our professional referees," the NFLPA said in a statement. "We welcome our fellow union members back on our field."

New York Giants linebacker Michael Boley said the return of the regular refs was essential for the game.

"The pressure on the replacement refs was becoming too much for them and all of the missed and blown calls were messing with the integrity of the game," he told the NFL Network.

"I'm not saying the real refs will get every call right but I think they will do a better job. Good to have them back."

UK services output bounces back in July

LONDON (Reuters) - British services sector firms grew at their fastest pace in over a year in July as activity recovered after a public holiday hit business in June, official data showed on Friday.

Services output rose by 1.1 percent in July, the biggest gain since May 2011, after a 1.5 percent drop in June, the Office for National Statistics said. Output was 0.7 percent higher than a year earlier.

The services sector makes up more than three quarters of British GDP, and Friday's data suggests the economy made a strong start to the third quarter, after contracting by 0.4 percent in the second quarter of the year.

July's month-on-month rebound adds to strong growth in manufacturing, making it likely that the economy will leave recession after three quarters of contraction.

The bulk of ticket sales for the London Olympics will be booked in August, when the majority of events took place, though some are included in July's figures.

The ONS also reported that output per hour across all sectors of the economy fell 0.9 percent in the second quarter, contributing to a 2.6 percent fall in productivity over the previous year. Unit wage costs rose 2.0 percent on the quarter, while unit labour costs edged up by 0.3 percent, the statistics agency said.

Britain's weak productivity since the financial crisis has been a major puzzle for the Bank of England, and potentially poses inflation risks when the economy recovers.

The ONS also said that following new international guidance, it was reclassifying the remainder of banks Northern Rock and Bradford & Bingley owned by the government as central government bodies rather than public sector corporations, as they were no longer actively trading.

This means that they will add to general gross government debt, with knock-on impacts on the key measure of public sector net debt targeted by Britain's government, back-dated to 2010.

The ONS said the changes would push up government gross debt by 53.4 billion pounds in 2010/11, reducing to a 37.4 billion pound increase in 2011/12.

The change will also reduce the general government deficit by 740 million pounds in 2011/12. The changes will appear in public finances data from early 2013 onwards.

My relationship isn't fun anymore... ? Weddingbee Boards

1.

ihatethis ?? December 7, 2013??

Hey Bees! Regular poster, secret account. I'm usually completely open on here, but I've posted a few pics on here and just in case I know someone in real life, I'd rather not have my name on this for the time being...

And I'll try not to make this super emotional, but I need some advice. I've been with my SO for 2 years. In the beginning, it was great. He's a great guy, super smart, ambitious, outgoing, and likeable. On paper, we look like the perfect couple. And for awhile, we were. We have the same goals, dreams, love each other and each other's families, great chemistry, never fought, just all around great relationship.

Things eventually weren't picture perfect but pretty close. We had a few arguments, but couples do that. We worked through them and moved on. Then he took a 8 month long job 10 hours away. To say things have been tense is the very least. I truly don't enjoy my relationship anymore. We argue a lot, I feel like he doesn't talk to me with respect anymore. Some things he says to me tear me down instead of building me up. And somethings just seem plain mean. I leave most conversations feeling unhappy.? I don't even like talking to him.

It's just a lot of little things, but it's stuff like:
1. If he has a bad day at work, he'll take it out on me. He'll be grumpy and moody and nothing I do or say helps.
2. He's made little remarks about how I should go to the gym, and tone up. I'm a size 4 so he's not saying I'm fat, just that I could use toning. He tends to be very critical of himself and other people. Not just in looks, but in how they live their lives. He's very critical of himself as well, but he's literally said "people should make themselves live up to my high expectations." He's called me unambitious, and said that I lack motivation, and in general mocks my job saying it's not a real job (I started my own business from home, and it's doing very well), and that he's going to have to earn all of our money when we're married (therefore he is the sole decision maker in how it is spent.)
3. He says he wonders about us and our relationship sometimes. Like whether it's actually going to last or not. Because we're polar opposites, both in personality and not sharing any hobbies or anything.
4.Whenever I point out something he does or says that makes me feel bad, he's like "Whatever, I'm an asshole and it's your own fault for being with me."

But I love him, even if I don't like him right now. We're not married yet, but we're planning on getting engaged this fall (have the ring picked out) and we're planning on a small beach wedding next year. We have our life planned, it reads like a storybook, even though it doesn't feel like one. I hate feeling this way, and I keep telling myself it's the distance. But what if it's not? I'm scared I'm going to get married and we'll be unhappy and get divorced.

Advice Bees? I didn't want to put a poll, because I think its super weird to base my relationship on some statistics, but I'd love your input and support. Thanks ladies!

Festival is sweet music to traders - Bundaberg News Mail

ACCOMMODATION providers have predicted a "bumper" holiday period with almost all levels of accommodation booked out for this weekend's Caloundra Music Festival.

Rob Burr with his daughter Aylah enjoyed the Caloundra Music Festival in 2011.

Cade Mooney

LIVE music, pristine beaches and sunny skies.

What could be a better place for a holiday than Caloundra?

Accommodation providers have predicted a "bumper" holiday?period with almost all levels of?accommodation booked out for?this weekend's Caloundra Music?Festival.

A combination of the festival, Caloundra Fringe Festival and great weather has given accommodation operators and retailers a boost.

Caloundra Holiday Centre principal Tracey Harris said bookings were up on the same time last year.

Bookings were in excess of 85% this week with the second week of holidays tipped to exceed 95% occupancy rate.

"In the last month the interest from Caloundra Music Festival?people has been outstanding and there is now nothing left for the music festival," Ms Harris said.

"I think the strong bookings have a lot to do with the great weather we've had."

Rumba Beach Resort director Bill Darby said holiday bookings were looking strong.

He said operators had a positive outlook for the holidays, with bookings about 25% up on the same time last year.

"Bookings have been strong and most resorts are booked out for the music festival," Mr Darby said.

"This first week of holidays has really filled up around the resorts in Caloundra, next week not so much at this stage, but the trend has been for a while now for last-minute bookings, which is very much dependent on weather."

Most resorts in Caloundra have a three-night minimum.

"During the school holiday?periods we mostly get families staying with us who are looking for a longer stay," Mr Darby said.

For the first time this year, Caloundra Music Festival-goers can choose to stay close to the action for less by camping this weekend.

Caloundra State School oval has transformed into a secure campsite for more than 100 people.

School principal Stephen Logan said there was still space for festival revellers to bring their own camping gear or RV.

"We have used the philosophy that if we build it, they will come," Mr Logan said.

"We've had some good interest and have reached one of our goals of 100 people and interest is growing daily."

Camping ground funds will go to air conditioning the school library.

The festival starts tomorrow and runs until Sunday.

Bizarre tumor case may lead to custom cancer care

It's a medical nightmare: a 24-year-old man endures 350 surgeries since childhood to remove growths that keep coming back in his throat and have spread to his lungs, threatening his life. Now doctors have found a way to help him by way of a scientific coup that holds promise for millions of cancer patients.

The bizarre case is the first use in a patient of a new discovery: how to keep ordinary and cancerous cells alive indefinitely in the lab.

The discovery allows doctors to grow "mini tumors" from each patient's cancer in a lab dish, then test various drugs or combinations on them to see which works best. It takes only a few cells from a biopsy and less than two weeks to do, with materials and methods common in most hospitals.

Although the approach needs much more testing against many different types of cancer, researchers think it could offer a cheap, simple way to personalize treatment without having to analyze each patient's genes.

"We see a lot of potential for it," said one study leader, Dr. Richard Schlegel, pathology chief at Georgetown Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center in Washington. "Almost everyone could do it easily."

An independent expert agreed.

For infections, it's routine to grow bacteria from a patient in lab dishes to see which antibiotics work best, Dr. George Q. Daley of Children's Hospital Boston and the Harvard Stem Cell Institute said in an email. "But this has never been possible with cancer cells because they don't easily grow in culture," he said.

The new technique may reveal in advance whether a person would be helped by a specific chemotherapy, without risking side effects and lost time if the drug doesn't work. "Pretty nifty," Daley wrote.

In the case of the 24-year-old, described in Thursday's New England Journal of Medicine, lab-dish tests suggested that a drug used to treat a type of blood cancer and some other unrelated conditions might help.

It's not a drug that doctors would have thought to try, because the man technically does not have cancer. But his lung tumor shrank after a few months of treatment, and he has been stable for more than a year. He still has to have operations to remove throat growths that keep coming back, but only about once every five months.

The man, an information technology specialist in suburban Washington who asked to remain anonymous to protect his privacy, has recurrent respiratory papillomatosis, or RRP. It's usually due to infection at birth with certain types of a virus, HPV, that causes genital warts.

The condition causes wartlike growths in the throat, usually around the voice box. These growths usually are noncancerous but can turn malignant, and even benign ones can prove fatal if they spread to the lungs. The main treatment is surgery, usually with lasers to vaporize the growths and keep them from choking off the airway or making it hard to talk.

About 10,000 or more people in the U.S. have the disease, said Jennifer Woo, president of the RRP Foundation. Woo, 29, is a medical student at Georgetown and one of the researchers on the study. She also has the condition but said it is confined to her throat and has required only about 20 surgeries so far.

The man in the study has a much more serious case.

"I was diagnosed when I was 3 or 4. At first, I had to have surgery every 7 to 10 days," the man said in a phone interview. "I get short of breath and my voice will get more hoarse."

Two years ago, the growths to his lungs became extensive and life-threatening, and his physician, Dr. Scott Myers, described the condition at a meeting of Georgetown hospital specialists. "It's crushing the airway," Myers said.

Doctors suggested that the new lab method pioneered by Schlegel and others might help. It borrows an idea from stem cell researchers: adding mouse cells for nourishment, plus a chemical that prevents cell death to an ordinary lab culture medium. That enabled healthy and cancerous cells to keep growing indefinitely.

Researchers grew "mini tumors" from the man's lung mass and from healthy tissue and screened various drugs against them. One proved ineffective. Another worked against the tumor but at too high a dose to be safe. The third did the trick.

A similar approach could let doctors screen drugs for cancer patients.

"What could be more personalized than taking this person's cell, growing it in culture, finding a drug to treat them and then treat them?" said Doug Melton, co-director of the Harvard Stem Cell Institute. The Georgetown method gives an answer quickly enough that it could save lives, he said.

Tyler Jacks, a cancer researcher at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and former president of the American Association for Cancer Research, said the next step is to show that this could work for many different cancers and that it leads to better outcomes in patients.

"It seems to have worked in this one instance, but other tumors might prove to be more challenging," he said.

The National Institutes of Health paid for much of this work and has already sent research teams to Georgetown to learn the method. About a dozen other universities have done the same, Schlegel said.

So far, his lab has grown prostate, breast, lung and colon cancer cells.

Georgetown University is seeking a patent on the method.

Government targets tax dodgers in deficit fight

BRIGHTON (Reuters) - The government will target wealthy tax cheats to raise funds for public finances, the Liberal Democrat junior coalition partners said on Tuesday, the latest attempt by ministers to drag a wayward austerity drive back on track.

Treasury minister Danny Alexander said the Conservative-Lib Dem coalition would also have to outline how it would deliver 16 billion pounds ($26 billion) in cuts in the first year of the next parliament, after an election in 2015.

The coalition had intended to all but eliminate Britain's record budget deficit and steer a sluggish economy back to health by the time of that election, but a return to recession this year has raised the prospect of cuts well beyond 2015.

That has triggered debate over how to share the burden of extra austerity, with the Lib Dems wanting the rich to pay more, including a tax on expensive homes, and the Conservatives eager to target spending areas such as welfare payments.

This year, Alexander said the government was on track to raise an extra four billion pounds from a tax crackdown and would widen its net to the wealthiest half a million people in Britain, with a net worth of more than one million pounds.

"We have this message to the small minority of wealthy people who don't play by the rules: we are coming to get you and you will pay your fair share," Alexander told his party's annual conference in Brighton, on the south coast of England.

Alexander - number two to Conservative chancellor George Osborne - said the government was doubling its team investigating those who hide assets offshore in Liechtenstein, potentially raising three billion pounds in extra tax revenue.

The Lib Dems, whose popularity crumbled after joining the Conservatives in coalition in 2010 and breaking pre-election promises, are trying to rebuild support as a credible centrist alternative to the Conservatives and opposition Labour Party.

Analysts predict the 2015 election could result in another coalition government, with the Lib Dems as kingmakers again.

Alexander said the Lib Dems would promise in the next parliament to raise the income tax threshold to 12,500 pounds, from a current target of 10,000 pounds, meaning anyone working full time on minimum wage would not have to pay income tax.

Such a pledge could prove a deal breaker in any future coalition negotiations.

Being a minor and legally accepting payments online? - Web ...

I'm under 18, but I'm ready to start an online business - specifically a company that specializes in getting other young internet users their own custom websites.

I have the funds required to start such a business, but I'm worried about legally accepting payments online. My parents would be willing to sign off on anything, but not willing to use their own accounts for anything (eg. making their PayPal into a business account with their name on it) - don't ask me why, they just aren't willing to do that.

I already have a PayPal Student account, but from what I've read in their TOS and from other people online is that I can't operate a business with that account - that I run a high risk of being limited.

Does anyone have suggestions from payment processors that allow minors to take payments as a business? Thanks in advance

You might just have to wait until you're 18

You'll need to have a parent or legal guardian obtain the gateway accounts. The only way around this that I am aware of is to be emancipated, but you'd want to talk to an attorney and, honestly, I wouldn't recommend that route.

Since you are not 18 and assuming you are from USA , you can not legally sign any contract nor own any business. Thus you can not accept payment online ( and offline in various situation).
I would suggest you to hold onto your fund and wait till you are legally mature .

The way to do this is to have a legal entity.

Then you provide your business details, EIN etc. Certain areas allow states to be registered at lower age levels so just research.

Just find a place to register with no age req. =)

From what I hear you can do is to get your parents to register your business and you be the only employee of that until you're 18 when you'll then be legally allowed to "take over" the business.

Hm, perhaps I phrased my OP wrong. I don't really want to register an official business, but I want to be able to accept maybe 50 transactions a month, and then be able to use that money.

Is there a way I could do this by myself?

I would honestly recommend that you do register a business. Especially if you're selling something.

Would your parents not be happy about being the "account holder" for the PayPal account where from their it can be linked to your bank, card and what not?

Considering you would have to pay taxes etc. You should really know what you are doing. You could also be putting your parents in a liability situation.

Our 16 year old twin daughters and our 13 year old daughter own an internet radio station that's been in operation since 2004, previously owned by their older sisters that are now married.

They have a bank account with us as the co signers on the account. They also have a Paypal account that's in our names dba as the name of their radio station. They have a membership for their radio station based on membership donation.

Their mom and I control the finances of their business. For them to write a check one of us have to co sign the check. We've had no issues with them and with the profits they're making all of that is going into their college funds as a tax free investment.

The way we're handling things is teaching them they must take care of their money, run their business legally, cannot waste their money, accounting, banking and straight up business management.

If you're under the legal age to own a business then I would suggest you get some adult help and learn some smart business practices from them, or you may end up being an also ran and hiding from your clients.

Good luck on your business venture.

There is no such legal thing as an "unofficial" business. I don't know about other states, but in California, a minor cannot enter in to any legal contract without parental/guardian consent/co-sign, etc. My advice? Focus on school, go to a good college, wait to run your business. There is PLENTY of time to do that after doing the things you should do when you're young, like getting a degree. Get it done and out of the way.

@Danny247 - there are ways to do it but you will need the cooperation/assistance of a parent and/or guardian.

I tend to agree with the others though, I would wait until I was 18. Heck, when I was 10~12 I was dreaming of having my own servers colocated and starting my own hosting business... I know what it's like to want to do something and feeling that you can do it, but not legally being able to do it [at least, not easily].

I'm 26 going on 27 now, if that puts anything into perspective for you.

I often come down hard on stupid teens and their stupid "businesses".

For once, somebody is doing things the right way.

Much respect, bruc.

I think Bruc's is the best suggestion.

I don't know about now but I remember my mom opening my bank account in my name when I was 10 and I used that account until I was an adult.

I had all sorts of after school jobs and so forth from 14, cashing cheques, saving money, and being responsible. Do hard work, get paid, get what you want...although when I was 14 I didn't even know about BBS's yet, so times are a bit different. But I started investing into my prior business from 16 and turned it into a full time business when I was older.

Unless you (or your parents) have to something to hide, and since online businesses are a bit different and have the potential of all sorts of scams, going through your parents would be the best route. Look at it as 1 year training to get you on your own feet when you turn 18.

Homes MSP Real Estate Blog: Windsor Green Townhomes... more ...

What?makes Windsor Green such a wonderful place to live isn't the beautiful townhouse complex grounds or Silverwood Regional Park across the street, although those are great perks.?What really sets it apart?is the people who live there and?create a wonderful sense of community.

When you buy a townhome in Windosr Green you are buying more than a place to live... you are becoming part of?an intelligent,?caring community. Here is an example of the kind of caring exemplified in the Windsor Green community, in the words of a resident...

Tea party
We have a preschool granddaughter that is confined to a wheelchair. Last year one of our neighbors planned a tea party inviting my granddaughter and all the other little girls of Windsor Green. The party took place under a canopy of trees at tables covered with linen table cloths, set with real china, with little sweets and tea. The grounds were decorated with brightly colored balloons and parasols. The older girls read children's books to the little ones on patchwork quilts in the grass. The party ended with a stroll around the pond, each little girl carrying a brightly colored parasol. The group of moms that had gathered had time for tea and visiting while the children played. I will never forget the joy on my granddaughter's face that day. What a kind thing for my neighbor to do!?

My grandchildren also enjoy the annual spring egg hunt, the summer root beer float party, and National Night Out where there are always activities for the kids. And the pools are a big hit all summer long. All the children of Windsor Green have learned to swim from excellent swim teachers during the summer.

New Brighton's Windsor Green was the first owner-occupied townhome complex in Minnesota. Its thoughtful plan including?spacious units of six different designs with attached double garages with huge decks?on?34 acres of beautiful, park-like grounds with miles of paths, 2 swimming pools, tennis courts and playgrounds was?carefully designed to entice people out of their single family homes to a community?with resort-like amenities where?you don't have to worry about mowing the lawn or shoveling the snow.

Part of the pretigious St. Anthony School District, Windsor Green?is a complex that welcomes pets and is designed for all ages, with a bus stop at the entrance to the complex and?easy access to both downtown Minneapolis and downtown St. Paul with?freeways and bus lines nearby.?

It never ceases to amaze me how many people have lived in Windsor Green for decades... many following their parents and grandparents who were original owners. That speaks volumes.

Properties have been selling quickly in this demand neighborhood... let me know if you would like to?know more about?homes for sale in Windsor Green.
